  • Len in La Plagne

Wednesday 21st Jan and paid my first visit this season to the glacier, encouraged to do so by the captain of my Rye House Rockets Speedway team, Edward Kennett.

The sun was poking through here and there and quite cold at -5C outside the Bon Coin.  Up for the long bubble ride to Roche de Mio, getting colder all the way, switched bubbles for the exciting ride through the Col De Chiupe with its great off piste powder and on up to the glacier itself.  On very cold snow we tripped across to the 4 man chair and rode up to the highest point of La Plagne at 3160metres.

There we temporarily lost the sunshine which made the skiing through the bumps interesting, but the snow was soft and forgiving and the sun came out again by the time we were on the fast stretch to the middle station.  I was a bit short of breath at that altitude, but Edward and Suzie were fine and after riding back up to the Roche De Mio, we all had a super fast run down La Source to Bellecote quite elated at our morning’s efforts.

Thursday was the best day’s ski-ing this year….. The new snow on Wednesday had been used by the piste machines to perfection so it was possible to cruise at speed with that wonderful feeling of being in full control with the edges of the skis carving as they should.  Spent most of the day in the sunshine on the Champagny side.  Friday was almost as good but cloudy skies sent me heading down into the trees of Montchavin, all the way to the bottom at 1250m and soft snow all the way.  What a bonus that was!  Crozats was good too but the vision was not as sharp with no trees to reflect the light.  Fortunately the pistes were so flat, and no bumps, the vision didn’t matter… More snow coming Friday night… I wonder what Saturday will bring?  Len

  • Len Silver Reporting from La Plagne

Woke up this morning (Wednesday) to find heavy snowfall taking place and fairly windy, looks like it’s going on all day and a brief look at the forecast tells me that apart from Thursday when we will get some sunshine, lots of snow to come, especially Friday night/Saturday morning.  Easy decision for me to do a bit of office work and a long lunch break!  Len

With the temperatures sitting nicely at -5C, the snow is staying in good condition.  Very sunny all day Tuesday (6 Jan) so I spent alot of time in the Champagny area where the sun is at it’s best.  I found Verdon South particularly good with excellent snow even on the steep reds on that side….. My favourite Rossa, as always, was a delight and I was able to “let it all hang out” and produce some fast speeds to make my heart bang a bit!  Afternoon skiing was mainly on the beautiful pisted red, Inversens, from the top of Roche de Mio,  just wish that chair was a little bit faster, but I’m nicely rested by the time I get to the top again so it’s not all bad.  Weather forecast is for more sun until Friday when we expect some more snow over the weekend…Len

The Silver Ski teams, both in the UK office and our resorts in France wish you all a very Happy Christmas.

The most up to date information on skiing conditions came through this morning (Christmas Eve) from Len Silver in La Plagne – he wrote ‘I ski’d for about 2 hours yesterday and mostly on very well prepared pistes, very enjoyable.  Only the steep parts were a bit icy, but quite manageable.  Snow is forecast for Friday (modest) Saturday (heavy) and Sunday (light).  Many more runs are open now.  Verdon North and Colorado lifts opened and the runs from them were excellent.  Some runs are open down to Montchavin although I have not yet ski’d them myself, only the Dos Rond down to the Pierre Blanche restaurant on very good snow…. In general the conditions are far better than expected.  Len’

The Silver Ski office will be operating on a skeleton staff over the festive period – please leave a message and we will get back to you!
