It’s that time of year again, the new ski season is upon us and the more fashion conscious Silver Ski guests out there are worried about what to wear on the slopes this year. The team at Simply Piste the online ski clothing store, specialise in ski and snowboard wear and have a large variety of ski jackets and accessories in stock for the coming season. They’ve kindly put together a post on what styles they think will be heavily featured on the mountains this year. So, whether you travelling to La Plagne, Courchevel, Meribel or La Tania, read on for great information on what to be seen wearing on the slopes in France.
What to watch out for
Practicality is almost certainly a compromise of style. This makes it hard to put together a definitive list of “what’s cool” for 2011/2012 due to the sheer amount of cool features most ski jackets now have. However we can start by suggesting some simple styles.
In General a lot of items this year seem to have simple print designs. Most are easily transferable across other garments. We love the Women’s Elana Jacket by Animal. Its subtle print design doesn’t scream too loudly and blends nicely with other colours and attire.

We’ve also noticed a lot of manufacturers this year focus their attention on less bulky items. The O’neill women’s Escape Kyanite jacket is a perfect example of a non bulky item. We like the added feature of the Polka dot trim on the pockets and wrist gaiters, very fetching.

We’ve seen a trend in women buying bright simple colours this year. You should be able to turn heads for the right reasons and jackets like the women’s Columbia Lay D down jacket is perfect for this. It comes with their special omni tech heat system which has received some very positive reviews. It also comes with a faux fur hood trim which has also seen a rise in popularity in recent seasons.

Keeping up with the simplicity factor, this next item wouldn’t look too out of place on the high street. Combined with great technical features, the Oakley women’s GB eco shell jacket goes perfectly with many other colours.

New to the Simply Piste store this year is the Swiss brand Eleven. This item is the Men’s Root jacket. Again what we love about this design is the simplicity. The denim print is a great touch, and as you can see, bulkiness has been cut out of Men’s jackets as well.

Moving away from ski Jackets now, an item we’ve received a lot of positive feedback for this season is the new North Face Womens Abby III boot. They come with some great practical features such as their ice pick technology, ensuring that you don’t take a tumble onto your backside, ruining all the style and dignity you thought you had.

We’re really excited about our kids ski wear range this year. And to celebrate this we’ve chosen some funky designs from our new partner Molo. In particular the tots Rainbow Pyxis suit is very vibrant...... It appears that simplicity does not apply in ski wear fashion for children.
The Molo Tots Pyxis suit - Rainbow
Icebreaker is usually known for its base layer clothing. However their Flexi chute neck gaiter is actually quite appealing and trendy looking. Again it’s fairly simple, not too exuberant and looks like it fits great.

Finally to add a little bit of humour to this post, I found these great beanies this morning by a total fluke, and now I’m hooked on them. The Beardo Beanie’s come from Canada and we’d love to get hold of some over here, simply for the quirkiness alone.

It is always fun to share your experiences with others and ski holidays usually provide a variety of great moments - have you captured any that you would like to share? Hilarious antics in the snow, relaxing in the chalet, groups around the dining table, breath-taking views or proud moments to cherish, we would love to see them all.

As a small incentive and a little ‘thank you’ a prize of a FREE 6 day ski lift pass will be awarded to the producer of the best clip or photo taken on a previous Silver Ski Holiday. The winner will be chosen and announced on Monday 12th December (just as the ski season commences) and the lift pass prize may be used in conjunction with a Silver Ski Holiday any time during the 2011/12 season.

Then look no further! Silver Ski Holidays Ltd have recognised the difficulty facing keen skiers wishing to travel over the festive period this season with Christmas Eve/Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve/New Year’s Day falling on the usual weekend transfer days. Silver Ski have negotiated revised flight times over this period and are offering our Christmas break as an eight day special to avoid travelling on Christmas Day. The 3 valleys is the largest ski area in the world with 600km of ski slopes which equates to 2500 hectares of groomed runs. The snow cannon count currently lies at 1500! The area boasts 200 ski lifts that can transport 260,000 skiers hourly, phew!!
Courchevel is a very extensive area in itself, encompassing the 1650 skiing on the Chanrossa in the East, the main area on Vizelle and the Saulire in the centre, and the La Tania skiing on Col de la Loze in the West. Add to that the runs down to 1550 and Le Praz and you have a terrifically varied wide and deep area, with some 64 lifts and a vertical range of 1300-2700 metres.
Not only is Courchevel the ideal skiing location, don’t forget that it also boasts fantastic boutiques and beautiful restaurants. The area is often frequented by not only the rich and famous but also Royalty. So, if it’s good enough for them…..what are you waiting for?
Book into one of our fantastically situated chalets in Courchevel 1850 now….

After discussion with friends recently who have suffered through the economic downturn - being made redundant from highly successful roles, a conversation ensued over how to turn this sole destroying event into a positive. As a group of reasonably successful (if we do say so ourselves!) 40-50 somethings, we began our debate on a Friday evening over a couple of glasses of vino. We all considered the routes we may take if the opportunity to change our lives ever came our way.
Most were, I suppose, unsurprisingly truthful and confessed that they would immediately do everything in their power to seek re-employment, straight back into the rat race, to try to ensure financial security for their families. Some considered re-investing their redundancy money and branching out into the property rental market. One (rather drunk) regaled his pipe dream of upping sticks, abandoning the UK, and living life as a naked beach bum (the finer details of which will remain firmly within our Friday night drinking circle).
For me, my dream is that of working my finances to allow me to pursue life on the piste (yes, with an ‘e’ - skiing, not just drinking!). I really would love to experience skiing for a whole season. Living the life of the chalet host or ski guide, who work hard and play hard!! Imagine being able to justify quality time on the slopes, every day, having given a couple of hours of hard graft in the morning. The dream life continuing when returning to your chalet late afternoon feeling totally invigorated, exchanging stories of life in the white stuff while preparing the evening meal with your fellow powder heads (over the inevitable glass or two of French plonk). Perfect!
For many this is not just a pipe dream, but a real life possibility. If ski-ing and socialising is your bag then you may be interested to know that Silver Ski Holidays Ltd are actively looking to recruit staff for the whole of the coming season - Submit your application here!
